Description

1985 Britannia 50p Uncirculated Coin

In 1985, only one 50p coin was issued, featuring the standard Britannia design.

The obverse of the coin shows the crowned bust of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right (her effigy known as the "Third Portrait"). The Queen is wearing the royal diadem which she wears on her way to and from the State Opening of Parliament, a pearl necklace and earrings.

Incused in tiny letters on the neck truncation, the designer's initials RDM for Raphael David Maklouf.

Around, the monarch's legend and the date of issue ELIZABETH II D · G · REG · F · D · 1985. Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith 1985.

The reverse design, by Christopher Ironside, shows Britannia seated. Britannia had appeared on at least one British coin denomination since the 1670s, and in fact long before that there were Roman coins showing the word ‘BRITANNIA’ and the helmeted female representation of Britannia to celebrate the Roman capture of Britain.

The 1985 Britannia 50p has the lowest mintage figure of the Britannia 50p coins to enter circulation.
