The 50^th Anniversary of London Pride will be celebrated on 1st July 2022 and to mark the event, the Royal Mint has issued a brand new 50p. Better still, it has been confirmed that 5 million of the cupro-nickel coins will be issued into general circulation so eagle eyed collectors may find them in your change.

The first UK Pride event took place 50 years ago in London on 1st July 1972 and was attended by over 2,000 people. The protest march was in solidarity with all those involved in the Stonewall Riots in New York. 

This is the first time Britain's LGBTQ+ community has been celebrated on an official UK coin and as part of the coin's launch, the Royal Mint has confirmed it will make a donation to Pride in London.

Pride UK is the largest event in the LGBTQ+ calendar and is synonymous with visibility, unity and equality. The annual parades are very colourful in nature and to compliment this, the reverse of the coin, which has been designed by artist, designer and LGBTQ+ activist Dominique Holmes, features 5 rainbows, each accompanied with part of the inscription, “PRIDE PROTEST VISIBILITY UNITY EQUALITY”. The obverse design features the latest portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark.

The Royal Mint have issued the coin in several qualities; gold proof, silver proof, coloured brilliant uncirculated, brilliant uncirculated and circulated quality.
